Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Guide: Tickets, Ferries & How to Visit

Plan Liberty and Ellis Islands with the authorized ferry, current ticket levels, screening times, pedestal and crown requirements and time for the museums.

The Statue of Liberty is familiar long before most travelers reach New York. Visiting changes its scale: the harbor opens around the ferry, the figure rises above the island, and the museum makes the monument a human project as well as a symbol. Ellis Island gives the day another direction, from the image of arrival to the lives of people who actually passed through the immigration station.

Plan this as an islands visit with transport, screening and time inside museums. The short ferry ride is only one part of it. Choose the access you want before booking, start early if both islands matter, and keep the rest of the day flexible enough to give Ellis Island more than the minutes left over after a photograph.

Buy a landing ticket from the authorized ferry operator

Statue City Cruises is the National Park Service’s authorized provider for ferry transportation that lands visitors on Liberty and Ellis Islands. A harbor sightseeing cruise can provide an appealing view without landing at either. Read the actual itinerary rather than relying on a picture of the statue or a product name containing the word Liberty.

Statue Of Liberty New York City

The ordinary ferry ticket includes access to the islands and their museums. Pedestal and crown reservations provide different access inside the monument and have limited availability. If the higher level is essential to the trip, investigate it before filling the day with other reservations. General admission does not become a crown ticket after reaching the island.

Use the operator linked by NPS when comparing the official options. The park warns about aggressive unauthorized sellers around The Battery and tickets for boats that do not deliver the promised island visit. A booking made through another service needs a clear description of what is included; a guided product and the basic ferry fare are different comparisons.

Understand what the current prices cover

The NPS fee page currently lists ordinary ferry prices of $26 for adults ages 13 and over, $17 for children ages 4โ€“12 and $23 for seniors 62 and over; children under four are free. Pedestal or crown access carries the small additional charge shown for the applicable reservation. Confirm the final product and current checkout before paying.

The museums do not have a separate ordinary entrance charge on top of the ferry transportation. This is why an America the Beautiful pass or a national-park free-entry day does not remove the ferry cost. Treat special tours, optional purchases and any parking at the departure point separately when building a group budget.

Compare ticket levels for their availability and suitability, rather than assuming a more expensive reseller package unlocks sold-out official access. Ask which ticket is actually being supplied. Families should also check the restrictions of the selected experience: the ordinary child age band does not determine who can climb to the crown.

Choose Manhattan or New Jersey before planning the journey

The Manhattan departure uses The Battery at the southern tip of the island. The New Jersey departure uses Liberty State Park. These are separate starting points with different routes from a hotel, even though both serve the national monument. Read the departure field on the reservation before opening a navigation app.

For Manhattan, travel to Lower Manhattan with time to locate the actual screening queue and follow current boarding directions. A subway station exit is not the same as the ferry entrance. Crown ticket holders have an additional check-in requirement at the ticket booth before boarding, so allow that task its own time.

For a New Jersey stay or a road journey, Liberty State Park may be practical, but evaluate the real connection and any parking arrangements. A view of Manhattan from the park does not establish an easy walk from every nearby station. Keep the return departure and onward journey clear as well, especially if your accommodation is on the other side of the harbor.

The time on the ticket is for the security queue

NPS explicitly explains that the printed ferry-ticket time is when you may join the screening queue. It is not a reserved boat departure or an appointment to enter the pedestal. At busy times, screening and boarding can take an hour or more. Build the day around that process rather than subtracting only a short sailing time from your next reservation.

Travel light. Large luggage, suitcases and oversized parcels are prohibited, and there are no storage lockers at the mainland screening facilities. The lockers near the monument’s secondary screening do not solve the problem of arriving at The Battery with airport bags. Arrange storage before coming to the departure area.

All passengers undergo screening before the ferry. Monument entry requires a second check with different item restrictions. Read the current list for the access you have booked, including rules for bags, food, bottles, strollers and other equipment. Something allowed on the island is not automatically permitted inside the pedestal or crown.

Liberty Island: give the outside view and museum time

Once ashore, take a little time to understand the setting before following the next line. The statue, its base, the open harbor and the Manhattan skyline are different subjects to look at. Walk within the available public areas and notice how the figure’s proportions change as you move closer or farther away.

The Statue of Liberty Museum adds the story behind the image. Exhibits explore the making and meaning of the monument, and the original torch provides a striking object to look at closely. It can be an especially useful stop for children who respond better to something tangible than to a long explanation delivered from a guidebook.

Statue Of Liberty Against Blue Sky

Use the audio-tour and ranger-program information available with the current visit, choosing the parts that interest you. There is no need to listen to every section before allowing yourself to look around independently. The island can be rewarding for someone who prefers not to climb inside the monument at all.

Pedestal access: a distinct interior reservation

A pedestal ticket allows the designated visit within the base of the statue, with a different view from the higher structure. NPS lists 215 steps to the top of the pedestal and an elevator for visitors unable to use the stairs. Discuss the full route if mobility will affect the experience rather than assuming a mention of an elevator describes every threshold and viewing position.

Reserve before traveling if this is important. Same-day availability is very limited, and pedestal reservations are not issued on Liberty Island. Arriving with general admission and hoping to upgrade beside the statue is therefore a poor way to organize an essential part of the trip.

Secondary screening applies, and several ordinary day-trip items are restricted inside. Use the lockers and current instructions for the belongings that cannot enter. For a family with a stroller, plan who will manage the equipment and how the visit will work for everyone. The island grounds and museum remain another valid focus for companions who do not take this portion.

Crown access: a climb inside the statue

The crown is a limited experience reached by stairs, not a large open-air terrace. From the top of the pedestal, NPS describes 162 narrow, steep steps leading upward, with a confined spiral section. There is no elevator to the crown. The appeal includes seeing the statue’s interior structure and reaching the small viewing area within its head.

Children must meet the minimum height of 42 inches, climb themselves and be accompanied by an adult. They cannot be carried through the route. Assess the actual staircase with the whole party in mind and read the park’s physical-mobility information. A ticket being available does not make the experience appropriate for someone uncomfortable with the space or climbing.

The current reservation guidance requires advance booking and limits the number of tickets per order. Adults collecting crown tickets need photo identification and the required wristbands before boarding. Only a few permitted items can go up, so follow the crown-specific list rather than the broader island rules.

Statue Of Liberty Crown Close Up

Do not choose the crown only because it sounds like the highest-value ticket. Its small windows and interior climb offer a different experience from a panoramic observation deck. A pedestal or grounds visit can be the more enjoyable option for many travelers, leaving more attention for the museum and Ellis Island.

Ellis Island: the second island deserves a fresh part of the day

Ellis Island’s National Museum of Immigration turns the visit toward individual lives and the processes of arrival. The former immigration station was busiest between 1892 and 1924, when it processed more than twelve million immigrants. Its history includes opportunity, uncertainty, inspection and exclusion, so approach the museum as more than a celebratory final room after the statue.

The Registry Room, often called the Great Hall, is a useful place to pause and imagine the practical scale of processing many arrivals. Then choose exhibits or personal accounts that help you understand a particular experience. Reading a few stories carefully can be more meaningful than trying to cover every gallery after a long morning outside.

If family history is part of the reason for coming, gather names, approximate dates and other details before the trip. Leave time for the resources you want to investigate, and check any separate research service or charge. Not every family’s arrival followed the same route, and a visit should not depend on finding a specific record immediately.

The separate Hard Hat Tour concerns the hospital complex on the island’s south side. It is a guided, separately booked experience with its own age, footwear and physical-access conditions. Do not treat the hospital buildings as areas included for independent wandering with every ordinary ferry ticket.

Keep ferries, food and weather in the day's budget

Use the current ferry timetable and staff directions at each island, paying particular attention to the destination shown for the boat you are boarding. Leave enough time for the final return sailing and any remaining queue. An early start gives both museums more room, but it does not remove the need to watch the operating day as it develops.

Account for a meal or a suitable food pause rather than expecting everyone to continue through the whole visit on a snack purchased before the first queue. Check what can be carried and where it may be consumed, especially if entering the monument. Water, sun, wind and standing time affect comfort even when the forecast looks pleasant for a city walk.

If the islands are the main event, avoid adding a second long cruise or several timed attractions afterward. A quiet Lower Manhattan meal or a short waterfront walk may be the right finish. The five-day itinerary leaves space around this day; the transport guide helps with reaching the correct departure point. Give the two islands enough attention, and the familiar statue becomes part of a much larger story.
